Ten Ton TV Episode #4: Working with WordPress and CMS in Dreamweaver CS5!

Ready for some Dreamweaver CS5? In Ten Ton TV Episode #5, I dig into one of the awesome new features; the ability to work with Content Management Systems like WordPress, Drupal, and others. See how Dreamweaver handles not only the previewing of a full WordPress blog, but also how to access the dynamic files and how to begin making changes.

At the end of the episode, I also pose the question: Should full-length, full-price DVDs be released for each new software version? For example, should a full-length Photoshop DVD be released when 90% of the content is the same? Or, should shorter upgrade DVD’s be released instead? I look forward to your comments!

Geoff--Re your question about new version vs upgrade. The answer is....
Make a NEW DVD! and charge NEW USERS FULL BOAT and OLD USERS and UPGRADE PRICE
Read below for the business case arguments--oh, and for doing the technical analysis how about putting me in the upgraders camp

Bonus--maybe you don't have a list of all the old Users wanting upgrades---have them send a digital picture of the old dvd with their order to get the upgrade price---sure you might have one or two people take a picture of a friends dvd but they would have borrowed the dvd at the FULL BOAT PRICE and you would get NADA--and your dvds are prob spread pretty thin in the population so that I prob spent more time explaining it than it would cost you in lost sales--some companies have even let pirates buy upgrades vs new because something is better than nothing.

1st New users like myself --and everyone else after they upgrade their software doesn't want to learn how it used to work and then find their software doesn't look that way--even if it is only 5% different we don't know just by looking that this is that 5% and we could spend hours pulling out our hair---it isn't like you are going back to the old dvd and pointing out the parts that we should skip what you are saying and go to the new version--and even if you did (a monumental task) who would want to to be jumping back and forth between dvds--CONFUSING.

2nd--If a user has an old version (ie a school or something) and they can't or won't upgrade you can still sell them the older DVD ---it has some residual value for you

3rd----DVDs don't cost much to make, ie press (not talking about the time to record the content) so your cost to distribute a new DVD would be the same whether it just has the changes or everything --in fact you would prob save money because for new users you would have to send them the OLD DVD and then the CHANGES DVD as well.

so make a new DVD--sure it will take some hours to re-record what you did before--heck you could prob just edit it in, instead of having to stand and deliver, right? BUT you would also have a chance to improve the old content based on feedback or just places you weren't totally thrilled with
and you would wind up with a superior NEW PRODUCT---

    Michael

Keep going. where are new versions of Ten Ton TV????

  • Man, there's a lot of info to digest here, Michael! But, I think you're really on to something...I really like the "full price vs. upgrade price" model. And, we have an extensive customer database, so we know who bought what anyway, so that would eliminate anyone trying to scam the system. Anyway, thanks a lot for all this. I'll bring all this up at the next coffee-induced meeting and we'll give it some serious consideration. Cheers! -Geoff

Well I feel that when ever a new version is created there should be a new training on it, in that way we can learn and refresh our memory, I liked your episode on CMS dreamweawer CS5
  • Thanks for the comment, Christina. You make a good point about refreshing the memory banks (I have the worst memory in the world...wait, where am I?). Glad to hear you liked the episode!

  • I'd like a DVD with just the updated info that has changed with CS5. However, if I were a new CS5 owner, I'd want to purchase a training video specific to my version and not have to sift through the "this is what it looks like in CS3, this is what it looks like in CS4, etc."

So, um.... I guess my vote is both! :)
  • Hi Angela,

That's a good point -- in other words, if you were brand new to Dreamweaver, you wouldn't want the clutter of the other versions in there. It's funny that you posted this, because I've been thinking about this issue since recording this episode and came to the same conclusion: An upgrade DVD and a new full-length DVD for the full version. That probably makes the most sense.

    Thanks for your input!
