Savin' Time and Billing For It Anyway with Dreamweaver CS3's New CSS Rule Management

So as you can see, moving your rules to other style sheets is a piece of cake. Just right-click and choose Move CSS Rules—easy as that. Whether you’re moving styles to an existing style sheet or to a new one, make sure to save your pages and style sheets before previewing your work in your browser, otherwise you might think I was messing with you. Now with that out of the way, you’re ready for the next bit, where you’ll see how Dreamweaver makes it easy to keep your rules organized—and you’ll see an even faster way for moving your CSS rules between style sheets.

Getting Organized: Sorting Your CSS Rules

Another huge time-saver in Dreamweaver CS3 (but still totally billable) is the ability to organize your rules in your style sheets simply by dragging and dropping them. For example, maybe you’d like to organize your style sheets so that all your Advanced Selectors, Class rules, and so on are all sorted together. Or maybe you want to group your rules based on where they’re used in your site. Which ever way you may want to sort your rules, it’s super-easy in CS3.

The following steps will work whether you’re workin’ with an internal or external style sheet. And here’s the really cool part: If your page makes use of several style sheets, you can even drag rules between those attached style sheets, thus giving you a much easier way for moving your styles around. How’s that for an improvement in Dreamweaver!? Let’s give it a try.

Here’s how to organize your styles:

  1. In the CSS Styles panel, select the rules that you’d like to sort.

As you saw earlier, you can use Shift, or Ctrl (Windows) or Cmd (Mac) to select multiple rules.

  1. Do one of the following:

• If you’d like to sort rules within a style sheet, simply drag your styles up or down in your list of rules to reorganize them. If you’re sorting rules in an external style sheet, and your style sheet isn’t currently open, Dreamweaver opens it in the background as soon as you finish dragging and dropping your rules.

• If you drag rules from one style sheet into another (perhaps from an internal style sheet into an external style sheet or vice versa), Dreamweaver moves your rules from one sheet to the other. Depending on where you move your styles, Dreamweaver may open your external style sheet in the background.
